But What is a Not for Profit Organisation?

A not for profit organisation (NGO, NPO, non-profit or not-for-profit) is an organisation whose objective is to support an issue for non-commercial purposes. Not for profit organisations may be involved in areas relating to e.g. the arts, education, healthcare, social work and conservation work.

Not for profit organisations will:

* be value led, addressing a social need rather than existing to generate a profit bearing revenue;
* be non profit making or will reinvest revenue for the purpose of achieving their objective;
* not be under direct political control (they must comply with UK legislation, but they cannot be controlled or influenced by the Government).

craftbox meets all of the above criteria. It relies on income from the sale of products, plus other grants and awards, to allow reinvestment back into the organisation in order to maintain and further it's declared aims. In all other ways craftbox is run as a business in order to apply appropriate processes and disciplines, particularly in the areas of financial control and transparency.
